GreenWood has watched, with increasing dismay, as the lack of governance in Honduras has led to a precipitous rise in unprosecuted murders and countless physical threats—often focused on environmental and indigenous activists. These crimes of intimidation circumscribe the daily lives and best efforts of even the most dedicated of our local community partners and our close colleagues at Fundación Madera Verde. In response to this latest outrage, GreenWood has joined with more than 50 international organizations in calling on Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández to vigorously prosecute this murder and to protect the universal rights of free people everywhere to enjoy the protection of law.
While we join the world in mourning the tragic loss of such a potent voice, GreenWood is mindful of the shared responsibility held by the international activist community, whose members partner with local leaders in conflict zones around the world. The unvarnished truth is that neither the celebrity bestowed on Berta Cáceres nor the support of the international organizations with which she collaborated were able to protect her. We get to go home to relative safety and security, but our local colleagues do not. In that, we have a special obligation to raise our voice in their defense, wherever and however it might have the greatest impact.
