An architecture graduate from Princeton, Silas apprenticed to Wendell Castle and received a fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts to study traditional marquetry with Pierre Ramond at the École Boule in Paris. He helped to launch GreenWood in the early 1990s through his participation in WARP (Woodworkers Alliance for Rainforest Protection) and has been a longtime, ardent supporter of the efficient and responsible use of wood veneers and forest resources. His creative application of many unusual and noncommercial wood species has greatly expanded his color palette.
